Another Day

The food here is, how shall I say, diverse.  Some of my friends and/or relatives, and you know who you are, would literally starve here. No, wait!  I saw a Subway sandwich shop down the street!  Saved.  My room is very nice, in the Asian style, small, tasteful, but somewhat sparse.  The shower gave me a little bit of trouble though - I coundn't find the shower head.  So, like an idiot, stooping over in the tub, I turned on the water, only to realize too late that the shower head was on the ceiling.  Nothing like a suprised cold shower!  I met my fellow instructors down here yesterday.  Two are from Thailand (I have difficulty understanding them), and one is from Scotland (completely unintelligible, but entertaining with lots of stories - he flew C-130's and even participated in the Faulklands War back in 1982).  I'll be teaching Chinese students who speak very little English and my Mandarin is ..... rusty!  Oh yes, and I can't hear very well.  Should be an interesting month!  Tomorrow is my first simulater session.  I'm excited.........  Hi to all!   Singapore Ted

Singapore:FirstDay

Well, here goes, my first attempt at blogging!  Who would have guessed.  I arrived here in Singapore around midnight (13 hours ahead of St. Louis) after about 28 hours of travelling. The last leg from Hong Kong (about 3.5 hours) really flew by, so to speak.  My first real exposure to the locals was my cab driver from the airport.  The dashboard of his cab was filled with models of airplanes, helicopters, ships, tanks, cars, etc.  And whenever he braked they would all light up and flash, and the helicopter blades would rotate!  It was a sight to behold!  I got up early (7:30), ate a great buffet breakfast which they say is included daily with my room.  If this true, I'm in trouble.  I've spent most of the day walking around the hood getting acquainted and trying to set up my computer, no easy feat for "low tech ted."  Right now I've got three adapter/converters sticking out of my wall socket.  It looks weird!  So much for today.  I hope this works.   Singapore Ted

Nearly there!

Hi everybody!  Well here I am in Hong Kong.  The first leg of travel was great, but the second one was brutal!!  It was gear up and the guy in front of me put his seat all the way back for most of the flight.  I became intimately reacquainted with my knees!  Fortunately I had an aisle seat and the person next to me was a petite asian girl and not a huge foreigner whose bathing habits are suspect.  I have a couple of hours here in Hong Kong before proceeding to Singapore.  We are thirteen hours ahead, I think.  It is 5:20 am Saturday in St. Louis and 6:20 p.m. Saturday evening  in Hong Kong.  Can't wait to get to Singapore at midnight and then to the hotel.  They fed us two lunches plus a light snack in between so I'm glad I didn't carry alot of food with me.  I'll e-mail again in Singapore, hopefully tomorrow, when I get set up.  I miss all of you already!!!

On the way!

First of all let me say this blog thing was not Ted's idea, so not sure how it will work out,but hopefully he'll have a little fun keeping tabs on his trip!  Speaking of his trip, it started this morning with a 10 a.m. flight to Chicago, then a 12:50 p.m. flight to Hong Kong--just checked his flight status and looks like it's on time and will arrive in Hong Kong at 5:10 p.m. (they are 13 hours ahead of STL).  So right now he has been in the air nearly 10 hours and will land in about 5 1/2 hours.  Wow that is one long flight!!!  Oh yeah, there's more--he then has a 3 hour layover in Hong Kong followed by a 3 1/2 hour flight to Singapore.  So that's the story so far .... hopefully Ted will post the next entry with some fascinating, colorful, intriguing details
